A Unique Cybersecurity Graduation Research Reflecting Scientific Excellence and Applied Innovation at Ar-Rasheed Smart University
In an academic setting that embodies innovation and a forward-looking approach to the digital future, the Cybersecurity Department at faculty of Engineering and Technology at Ar-Rasheed Smart University discussed a distinctive graduation project today, Tuesday, May 27, 2025. The project was titled:
"Network Detection System (NDS): A Hybrid System for Real-Time Network Flow Detection Using Machine Learning and Suricata Integration."
The project was part of the graduation requirements for the Bachelor’s Program in Cybersecurity and was presented by student Raghad Al-Qayri, in the presence of university officials and academics, including Professor Dr. Abdul Latif Haidar,The rector of the University, and Associate Professor Dr. Anwar Al-Thari, Head of Cybersecurity Department, along with Professor Khaled Ali Al-Khadr, Secretary-General of the University, and a group of faculty members and students.
The project aims to develop an intelligent, cost-effective system capable of detecting cyber threats in real-time, particularly in small and medium-sized organizations. It utilizes an agent for network flow collection and a central server employing machine learning algorithms and Suricata technologies, enabling efficient detection of advanced cyberattacks.
During the presentation, the rector of the University expressed his pride in the high-quality graduation projects emerging from the university, stating: "We believe that the future is shaped in moments like these—where knowledge meets creativity, and application meets research. This project is a true embodiment of Ar-Rasheed Smart University's vision to prepare professionals capable of leading digital transformation and cybersecurity efforts locally and regionally."
Meanwhile, Dr. Anwar Al-Thari, Head of the Cybersecurity Department, emphasized the project's scientific and practical significance,
adding: "We encourage projects that blend advanced technical aspects with real-world market needs. This model serves as a tangible example of what our graduates can contribute to network security and cyber threat mitigation."
The discussion panel, consisting of Professor Dr. Naji Ali Al-Shaibani, Engineer Al-Waleed Al-Duais, and Dr. Anwar Al-Shamiri, Head of Information Technology Department, praised the quality of the presentation and the outstanding research effort, considering the project a groundbreaking advancement in applied research for intelligent network detection systems.
The session concluded with a spirit of pride and inspiration, as the project reflected scientific ambition and practical vision, reinforcing Ar-Rasheed Smart University's commitment to fostering an innovative academic environment—one that believes every ambitious idea can be the beginning of a promising success story.
