Under the sponsorship of Professor Abdullatif Haider, the rector of Ar-Rasheed Smart University, and under the slogan: "Together Against the Crimes of Electronic Extortion", the Deanship of Student Affairs and the Psychological Guidance Unit at the University organized a special symposium on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, on the risks of cybercrime on the Yemeni society, held on the university campus
During the opening of the event, which was attended by the University Secretary-General, Mr. Khaled Ali Al-Khadr, the Director-General of the Communications, Transport and Public Works Committee, Mr. Hussein Qaid Zaid, the Director-General of Follow-up at the House of Representatives, Mr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Wada'i, and a group of specialists in the risks of cybercrime, as well as the academic and administrative staff and university students, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Abdulkhaliq Hadi Tawaf, welcomed everyone, stressing that the symposium addresses a vital and important topic in this era, which is "the risks of cybercrime on the Yemeni society".
In his opening speech, he emphasized the need to pay attention to the outcomes of the symposium, which came at a time when artificial intelligence and Big Data have become the main controllers of the way of life, noting that technological development and the expansion in the use of the Internet and social media platforms have brought many issues and advantages, but it has also opened the door to new challenges, the most prominent of which is the growing phenomenon of cybercrime, which has become a security and societal threat
He also stressed that cybercrime is a growing challenge in the Yemeni society, requiring the concerted efforts of educational and community institutions to confront it, wishing that the symposium would yield benefits that contribute to protecting our society from cybercrimes.
The symposium reviewed four main topics: the first, "The Security Threat in Cyber-Extortion Crimes", presented by Dr. Ibtisam Al-Mutawakil, Director of the General Directorate for Family Protection at the Ministry of Interior; the second, "Electronic Fraud and Extortion: Methods and Self-Protection", presented by Colonel Ahmed Yahya Ali Siraj, a lecturer and researcher in cybercrime.
The third topic, "The Security Threat in Cyber-Extortion Crimes", was presented by Eng. Tariq Muhammad Radhi, Director of Information Security at the Public Telecommunications Corporation, and the fourth topic, "The Reality of Cybercrime in Yemen", was presented by Dr. Fahmi Muhammad Al-Naamai, a doctor and researcher in media awareness of the risks of cybercrime.
After the discussions and comments on the working papers presented at the symposium, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Abdulkhaliq Tawaf, read the recommendations of the symposium.
At the end of the event, in the presence of the University President, Prof. Dr. Abdullatif Haider, the presenters of the working papers were honored for their efforts and active participation in the symposium. The University President also expressed his great gratitude to all the guests and participants in the symposium, and thanked the Deanship of Student Affairs and the Psychological Guidance Unit at the University for their efforts and the success of the event.
